Lip Filler Treatment: How to Choose the Volume, Preserve a Natural Result, and What to Avoid Afterwards

A natural result from lip filler treatment depends on anatomy, the properties of the filler, and the injection technique. One millilitre is not a universal dose: delicate correction requires a smaller volume, while asymmetry may require a staged plan. The aim is to harmonise lip shape, proportions, and movement.

What Can Be Changed with a Filler

Hyaluronic acid fillers are used to increase lip volume, define the contour, correct asymmetry, and restore age-related loss of fullness. The product is injected with a needle or cannula into selected anatomical layers. After the procedure, the hyaluronic acid gel maintains shape within the tissues and is gradually resorbed over time.

Lip contouring does not change the bite or jaw position and does not always correct asymmetry caused by facial movement. If one side rises more strongly when smiling, the physician assesses the muscles and the proportions of the entire lower third of the face.

Why Volume Cannot Be Chosen from a Photograph Alone

The same volume looks different depending on mouth width, vermilion height, and tissue density. The physician assesses the face from the front and in profile, the smile, previous fillers, and any possible nodules or migration.

Subtly define the contour. The physician assesses the height and definition of the vermilion border; a possible approach is the delicate distribution of a small volume.

Add fullness. The proportions of the upper and lower lips are assessed; correction is performed gradually without overloading the tissues.

Correct asymmetry. The physician compares the lips at rest and when smiling; the volume may differ between sides, and treatment is sometimes divided into stages.

Restore age-related volume. Tissue density and lines around the mouth are taken into account; the lips are corrected as part of an overall plan for the lower third of the face.

The phrase “I want exactly 1 ml” describes the package size, not a medical plan. For a predictable result, the physician may divide the correction into stages and assess the shape after swelling has subsided.

Which Fillers Are Used at Medest

At Medest, Restylane, Juvederm, HyaFilia, Artfiller, and RRS HA Long Lasting products are used for filler treatments. Filler ranges differ in elasticity, plasticity, ability to retain shape, and registered indications. The lips require a product intended for this area; brand recognition alone does not determine the choice.

The patient should know the name and volume of the product and the expected characteristics of the result. Injections are performed by a medical professional with knowledge of vascular anatomy and the management of complications.

How to Prepare for Lip Filler Treatment

  • Tell the physician about previous fillers, herpes, allergies, medical conditions, and any medicines you take.
  • Do not stop anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any other prescribed treatment without medical advice.
  • Postpone the procedure if there is active herpes, inflammation, a rash, or infection in the lip area.
  • Do not schedule injections immediately before a flight, wedding, photo shoot, or dental treatment.
  • Discuss the shape in the context of the whole face rather than relying only on a magnified photograph of the lips.

If you are prone to recurrent herpes, the physician will decide whether a preventive regimen is needed. Antiviral medicines should not be started without medical advice. Dental procedures and acute infections should be separated in time from filler injections because inflammatory responses may affect the area containing the filler.

What Is Normal After Lip Augmentation

Swelling, tenderness, minor bruising, and temporary asymmetry during the first few days are common reactions. Swelling may appear more pronounced in the morning. The final shape cannot be assessed immediately after the injections: the tissues need to settle and the gel needs time to distribute.

Do not massage nodules yourself unless the physician has demonstrated the appropriate technique. Massage is not required after every filler or for every injection area. A follow-up examination is performed at the time specified by the specialist; this is when the need for any correction is assessed.

What to Avoid After the Procedure

  • Do not touch the injection sites with unwashed hands or apply pressure to the lips.
  • Do not apply colour cosmetics before the time specified by the physician.
  • During the first 24 hours, avoid intensive exercise and alcohol, which may increase swelling and bruising.
  • Avoid substantial overheating, saunas, and very hot procedures for a short period.
  • Do not have facial massage or other treatments that apply pressure to the lip area.
  • Do not undergo dental or aesthetic procedures without prior approval.
  • Do not attempt to “add volume” yourself or with needle-free injectors.

The exact restrictions depend on the product and technique. If the physician’s recommendation differs from this general list, the individual instructions provided after the procedure take priority.

When Urgent Contact with the Physician Is Required

A rare but particularly serious filler complication is injection of the product into a blood vessel or compression of a vessel, which compromises the blood supply to the tissues. Contact the physician immediately if you develop severe or increasing pain, unusual blanching, a mottled or net-like pattern, an area of cold skin, rapidly worsening asymmetry, or visual disturbance. Marked redness, heat, discharge, and fever may indicate infection and also require medical assessment.

How to Avoid an Overfilled Appearance

Three principles help preserve a natural result: respect for the original anatomy, a moderate volume, and assessment after recovery. Maximum projection does not need to be achieved in a single visit. If filler is already present in the tissues, the physician first assesses its condition; it may be safer to postpone adding further volume or to discuss correction of the previous product.

At a Medest consultation, the physician will assess facial proportions, select an appropriate filler, and explain which volume is suitable for your treatment goal. Book lip filler treatment in Yerevan if you want to refine shape and volume while preserving natural facial movement.
