Why Legs Swell in Summer and Which Massage to Choose: Lymphatic Drainage, Anti-Cellulite Massage, Stone Therapy, or BeautyLizer

What Is Swelling and Why Does It Become More Pronounced in Hot Weather?

Swelling, or edema, is the accumulation of fluid in the tissues. Under the influence of high temperatures, the blood vessels in the skin dilate to help the body release heat. At the same time, gravity promotes the movement of fluid into the lower part of the body, especially when a person stands for a long time, sits on an airplane or in a car, and moves the feet very little.

Temporary swelling may also be aggravated by excessive intake of salty foods, unfamiliar physical exertion, tight footwear, the premenstrual period, and certain medications. Persistent or regularly recurring swelling may occur with disorders of the veins, lymphatic system, heart, kidneys, liver, or thyroid gland. Massage does not replace the diagnosis or treatment of these causes.

How to Distinguish Ordinary Evening Swelling from a Warning Sign

Mild, symmetrical swelling after a hot day often decreases after rest, walking, or elevating the legs. However, the cause cannot be determined independently from appearance alone.

A medical assessment is required before massage if:

  • only one leg is swollen without an obvious reason;
  • the swelling appeared suddenly, is increasing rapidly, or is accompanied by severe pain;
  • the skin has become red or hot, or a wound has developed;
  • shortness of breath, chest pain, or heaviness has developed;
  • the swelling is accompanied by fever or pronounced weakness;
  • there are diagnosed conditions of the heart, kidneys, blood vessels, or lymphatic system;
  • the swelling does not decrease for several days or becomes more pronounced.

In the event of sudden one-sided swelling and pain, massage must not be performed until thrombosis has been ruled out. The procedure is also postponed in the presence of infection, acute inflammation, decompensation of a chronic condition, or poor general health.

What Can Be Done for Mild Swelling?

If serious causes have been ruled out, simple measures can help reduce the feeling of heaviness:

  • Take short walks and move the feet during prolonged seated work.
  • Do not stand still for several hours at a time.
  • Rest with the legs elevated if this is comfortable.
  • Choose shoes and socks without constricting straps or elastic bands.
  • Maintain your usual fluid intake and do not try to “dry out” the body.
  • Do not take diuretics unless prescribed by a physician.

Compression garments may be used for venous disorders and certain types of edema, but the compression level and size must be selected by a healthcare professional.

Which Massage to Choose for Leg Swelling

MethodMain PurposeWhen It May Be SuitableImportant Considerations
Lymphatic drainage massageGentle, directed movements to support the movement of tissue fluidA feeling of heaviness and a tendency to swell after contraindications have been ruled outIt should not be painful; in confirmed lymphedema, it is part of comprehensive therapy
Anti-cellulite massageMore intensive work on the tissues and skin textureWhen the main concern is uneven skin texture rather than acute swellingIntensity is selected individually; pronounced pain and bruising are not treatment goals
BeautyLizerDevice-assisted vibrocompression for cosmetic tissue correctionA combination of heaviness, swelling, and a desire to improve body contoursA preliminary assessment of general health and vascular status is required
Stone therapyRelaxation and work on muscle tension using heated stonesWhen the main goal is relaxation and there is no swelling or vascular restrictionAdditional heat is not the first choice for pronounced swelling in hot weather

How Lymphatic Drainage Differs from a Regular Massage

Lymphatic drainage techniques are performed slowly and gently. Their purpose is to direct fluid toward functioning lymphatic drainage pathways rather than to knead the muscles deeply. In diagnosed lymphedema, manual lymphatic drainage is used together with movement, skin care, and properly selected compression. A single procedure does not eliminate the chronic cause of the swelling.

BeautyLizer Device-Assisted Massage at Medest

Both manual and device-assisted types of massage are available at Medest. BeautyLizer combines vibrocompression with LED therapy; the rotating spheres of the handpiece mechanically work the tissues. The specialist selects the mode and intensity according to the treatment area and objective.

BeautyLizer

BeautyLizer may be considered as a cosmetic procedure for a feeling of heaviness, a tendency toward fluid retention, and uneven skin texture once contraindications have been ruled out. The device does not treat thrombosis, heart failure, or kidney failure and does not replace therapy for varicose vein disease. For patients with hypertension, varicose veins, implanted devices, or chronic conditions, as well as during pregnancy, the suitability of the procedure is determined individually.

How to Prepare for a Massage in Summer

Do not attend the procedure immediately after a day at the beach, strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption, or if you have signs of overheating. Tell the specialist about any medications, pregnancy, venous conditions, episodes of thrombosis, high blood pressure, and any changes in your general health. If swelling has developed for the first time, it is safer to begin by identifying the cause rather than choosing a device.

Book a consultation at Medest: the specialist will assess the nature of the swelling and select an appropriate option — lymphatic drainage, general or anti-cellulite massage, or BeautyLizer. If warning signs are present, a medical examination will be recommended first.
